NECA NSW 2010 Excellence Award Winners
The NECA NSW Excellence Awards were announced on Friday 24 September at a luncheon held at Star City Casino.
NECA congratulates all the winners and certificate of commendation recipients. The winners will now go into the NECA National Awards which will be announced in Sydney in November.

Award Winners
Domestic Residence
Winner: Automated Innovation
Project: Residence
Automated Innovation were contracted to provide the electrical services into this impressive domestic residence. The brief was to create a system that would allow the home to be completely self-sufficient plus energy and water independent if required. It also required all electrical, power, lighting, audio visual, data and security systems be integrated into a user friendly control system. This required a massive 52 panel solar PV system. The final outcome is an exceptional installation and a credit to the team at Automated Innovation.
Small Contracting Business
Winner: TN Electrical
Project: SMC
TN Electrical have been contracted since 2001 by SMC Pneumatics to carry out electrical services for their Australian headquarters. Sections of the site operate rotating 24 hour shifts, seven days a week, so it is imperative that power outages due to component failures are kept to an absolute minimum, therefore on-going maintenance and monitoring of the electrical installation is critical to ensuring fail safe operations. The company plan 12 months in advance, thus laying the foundations for the future requirements of SMC.

Environment and Energy Efficiency
Winner: Stowe Australia
Project: Sydney Town Hall Solar Installation
The City of Sydney leads by example with its Sustainable Sydney 2030 vision, and as part of this initiative, the Sydney Town Hall sought a solution to improve its environmental and energy efficiency footprint. Stowe Australia were awarded the contract to install 240 x 200 watt solar panels. By utilising the latest technology, Stowe was able to offer an increase in power capacity to 48 kilowatts at their peak. A key factor in winning the project was Stowe’s solution for a more appropriate mounting system on the buildings heritage roof.

Winner: Bass Electrical Engineering
Project: Bass Electrical Engineering
Bass Electrical Engineering is committed to providing a safe, healthy work environment by continually developing and improving its overall OHS management systems through analysis, review and education. Employees are encouraged to follow the philosophy of “taking the time to do it right” as a more cost effective approach, than taking risky short cuts. This has been wholeheartedly adopted across all work fronts as evidenced by Bass’s enviable record of 1 million hours lost time injury free. A record to be proud of by all employees at Bass Electrical Engineering.

Winner Heyday Group
Project: Sydney Desalination Plant
With Sydney’s water supply hovering near and often below 50%, finding alternative solutions is a critical priority. One solution is the construction of the Sydney Desalination Plant at Kurnell. At capacity, the plant will generate 250 million litres of water a day, providing about 15% of Sydney’s water supply. Heyday Group were contracted to provide the high voltage and low voltage power, electrical and instrumentation and fire protection packages for this essential facility. Heyday can be proud to have helped construct a world class facility.

Winner: JCB Communications Pty Ltd
Project: O’Brien Building, St Vincent’s Hospital
The seven storey O’Brien Building at St Vincent’s Hospital will provide a comprehensive mental health facility, including high security monitored health observation wards and help-line call centres. JCB’s scope included all data and communications including six dedicated computer rooms, over 1,600 Cat 6 outlets, fibre ties to external buildings and copper ties to the external campus PABX. The project was a complete success and is an excellent showcase of JCB Communications’ abilities.

Winner: Heyday Group
Project: Macquarie Group No 1 Shelley Street Comms
When the Macquarie Group decided to relocate their headquarters, they chose Heyday Group to supply and install all communication and data services into their new 11-floor office tower. Services included Cat 6 horizontal and vertical data cabling system, fibre optic OM3 and OS1 horizontal and vertical data backbone, UTP Cat 5e voice grade and RG6 backbone cabling. The project was delivered to the complete satisfaction of the client, reinforcing their already strong relationship with both the client and the builder.
Commercial – Small Project
Winner: Ron Bateman Pty Ltd
Project: Treacy Building, Christian Brothers High
The Christian Brothers High School “Treacy Building” is a heritage listed site that houses the school hall. Ron Bateman Electrical won the tender for the complete upgrade of electrical works including power, specialist theatre lighting and a large electronically operated retractable tiered seating system. The challenges included, installing cabling and equipment into a heritage site and working in a busy school environment ensuring no risk to students. The successful outcome has already earned Ron Bateman further works with the school.
Commercial – Medium Project
Winner: Downer EDI Engineering
Project: Accessibility and Western Foyers Project, Sydney Opera House
The Accessibility and Western Foyers project is an important milestone for the Sydney Opera House. Downer EDI Engineering were engaged to deliver excellence in workmanship for the electrical systems including general public area lighting, specialised theatre lighting and controls, power, security, CCTV, emergency and exit lighting, auto door, lift and escalator power supplies and controls. Downer EDI Engineering can be proud of their successful contribution on this project in one of the world’s most iconic buildings.
Commercial – Large Project
Winner: Stowe Australia Pty Ltd
Project: Media Hub Australia
The Media Hub facility is a shared access digital playout centre jointly owned by the ABC and WIN TV. It is the primary re-transmission and origination site for a number of TV broadcasters with a capacity of up to 300 channels. Stowe Australia was appointed for all electrical installation works ranging from the upgrade of the supply authority substation to the selection and configuration of the equipment required to maintain a continuous on-air presence. The final outcome is a high tech facility and is a credit to the team at Stowe.
Judges Choice Award
Winner: Phasor Electrical Pty Ltd
Project: Electrical Audits and Upgrade Works for British American Tobacco’s South Pacific Manufacturing Plants
In recognition of breaking into new markets and supporting the development of good electrical practices in the Pacific rim region based on Australian and New Zealand standards and supporting the local skills development.
