Safe Work Methods Statements
Safe Work Method Statements
NSW OHS legislation effectively requires the use of Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) on all low voltage electrical work. The NECA has developed an extensive range of SWMS templates for many of the common tasks undertaken by electrical contractors. These sample documents meet the legislative requirements for safe work method statements in the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 2001 and the format outlined in the NSW WorkCover Code of Practice – Low voltage electrical work.
These SWMS templates are acknowledged as industry best practice and should be edited into organisation-specific formats with company name, etc. Provision is also made for the job and site details on larger construction jobs.

The SWMS provides a system of work that should include a written risk assessment (HRA) that identifies the site specific issues for the job and confirms that the SWMSs are suitability to perform the task.

The SWMSs reference relevant clauses the NECA Safety Guide for Employees in the Electrical, Communications and Data Industries (NECA Red Book). This provides additional information associated with relevant risk control measures.
